Mei in Seattle!

みなさんはじめまして！新しく船橋校のカウンセラーになりましたMeiです。
今回は私がアメリカのシアトルに旅行したときのことを書きます！
シアトルにはスターバックス一号店や、スペースニードル等見どころがたくさんありますが、その中でも私が一番行ってみたかったのはPike Place Marketという場所です。

新鮮な魚介類や野菜などが並ぶマーケットですが、そこには「ガムウォール」という人気スポットがあります。
遠くからみるとカラフルで綺麗なこの壁ですが、よく見ると名前の通り、人が噛んだあとの無数のチューイングガムが貼り付けられているんです！

撮影にはぴったりな場所ですが、衛生的ではないので撮影する時は壁に触れないようにお気をつけください(^^)

Hello Everyone. My name is Mei and I’m a new counselor at Funabashi School.
This time I’ll write about my trip to Seattle, USA!
Seattle has a lot of sightseeing spots such as the first Starbucks store and the Space Needle.
The one, I wanted to visit the most was Pike Place Market!
You can find fresh seafood and vegetables there.
They also have something called the Gum Wall.
From far away, it’s beautiful and colorful, but up close, as the name suggests, its made of chewed gum !
It’s a great place to take pictures, but it’s not hygienic, so be careful not to touch the walls as you pose 😊

Yuka at Inlay lake(Myanmer)

数年前、ミャンマー国内を色々まわったので、今回はインレー湖での旅を紹介します！当時、ヤンゴンを拠点に生活していたので、基本的に夜行バスで旅に出ていました。バスに揺られて約１３時間、現地に到着後まずは小舟に乗り、インレー湖を周遊しました。湖には少数民族のインター族が水上で暮らし、細長い木製の小舟が移動手段です。小舟の先端に立ち、片足でオールを操りながら大きな竹籠の仕掛けで魚をとる漁師の姿が有名です。

水上を小舟で周っているとその時期お祭りが開かれており、民族衣装に身を包んだ人々が止まることなく次々にボートに乗って現れました。あまりに長いので途中で飽きてしまいまいましたが（笑）小舟ツアーでは、湖上にある寺院の見学、蓮の茎からとった繊維から作られる織物の工場見学、首長族との出会いもありました。

翌日には、インレー湖の周りをサイクリング。朝晩は涼しいですが、日中は暑く、日差しが痛い中、漕ぎきることができました。

最終日、カックー遺跡に行く途中、頭にカラフルなタオルを巻いているパオ族と遭遇！全身黒の服がカラフルさを引き立たせ、とっても素敵でした。カックー遺跡は、約2480基もの仏塔が林立しています。インドの王様が建立しはじめたのが起源で、その後バガン王朝時代の王様が地域の住人に対して、各家庭から仏塔を寄進するように命じたそうです。寄進した方々の地位や財力により、仏塔の形や大きさが異なっています。

インレー湖旅はヤンゴンから離れ、自然の中で過ごすことができたのでとってもリフレッシュできました～

I traveled around Myanmar a few years ago and I would like to share about Inlay lake this time.

I lived in Yangon at that time, so I basically used night buses when I traveled. After a 13 hour bus ride, I finally made it to the Inlay lake town. First thing I did was take a tour on a small boat. Intha people live above Inlay lake and they use small boats made of wood as a means of transportation. It’s famous for fishermen who stand on the edge of the small boats and catch fish with a big bamboo basket while they handle the oar with one leg. 

While there, there was a festival where people in traditional costumes had a parade in boats continually. I enjoyed the beginning, but I got tired in the middle of the parade since it was so long. I went to see a temple on the lake, visited a factory where they made fabric from lotus stem, and also met Kayan people famous for long necks while on the small boat tour. 

It was fun cycling around Inlay lake the next day. I finished the course even though it was chilly in the morning and evening, but hot in the evening when the sun was harsh.

On the last day of my trip, I saw Pao people who wore colorful head scarves on the way to Kakku pagodas. The black cloth brought out the colorful head scarves.There are 2480 forests of pagodas at the Kakku site. They were built by an Indian king and a later king of the Bagan dynasty commanded citizens to donate pagodas from each family.The pagoda’s design and size is different depending on people’s status and wealth.

Traveling to Inlay lake and spending time in nature apart from the city, allowed  me to relax and unwind.

Yuka in ルアンバパーン

マレーシアに留学中に近隣の東南アジアの国に行きました。その中でも年越しをしたラオスのルアンバパーンは思い出に残っています。街全体が世界遺産になっており、コンパクトなので、一人旅で周りやすい場所だなと思いました。

私が現地で体験して印象に残っていること、まずはクアンシ―の滝。街郊外にあるので半日ツアーに申し込みました。エメラルドグリーンでとても綺麗でした！水着で泳いで楽しんでいる観光客もいました。それから、東南アジアでよくある象乗りや象使いを体験。初めて象と近くで触れあい、好きになりました。濁った川に何度も振り下ろされたのはいい思い出です(笑)メインストリートにあるプーシーの丘からは、街全体が見渡せて、メコン川が見えます。最終日には、大晦日ということで街の一部にパーティー会場があって、夜遅くまで現地の人踊って、お酒を飲んで楽しんでいたことも印象的です。他には、早朝の托鉢やナイトマーケットなどもありましたよ！

 

I visited countries in Southeast Asia when I studied abroad in Malaysia. Luang Prabang in Laos, where I spent New Year’s Eve is one of the memorable places I went. The whole town is designated as a world heritage site and it is a small area, so I thought it would be a good place to travel by myself.

One impressive place was Kuang Si Waterfall. I joined a half day tour to go there because it is out of town. Tourists were enjoying swimming in the Beautiful emerald green Waterfall. Also, I tried riding on elephant. I started to like elephants once I spent time with them. I’ll never forget how the elephant shock me off into the dirty river many times. You can overlook the whole town and Mekong river from Phousi hill on the main street. That was the venue for the New Year’s Eve party. I enjoyed drinking and dancing on the last day of my trip in Laos. You can also see monks receiving alms in the early morning and people shopping at the night market.

Markの冬休み Part 2

On our way back from the snow monkey park, I broke my glasses. They were basically unrepairable. So on our way to Bessho Onsen, we stopped at Ueda, a suburban area with a shopping mall. I was able to buy a new pair of glasses there. I was so surprised by how quick this process took – no more than two hours! In Australia, it usually takes about a week to get a new pair of glasses.

Ueda is situated more in the southern part of Nagano and to my surprise, it took about two hours to get there by train from Yudanak. Ueda also has a castle there that played a role in the battle of Sekigahara. Around the castle grounds, there was a big playground that my son could go and play in.

The last part of the mini trip was at Bessho onsen. It’s also another small town famous for its hot springs. The town is more situated in a valley, so there wasn’t really any snow there. We stayed at a Ryokan style hotel. Most of the town was closed up for New Year’s and were only two restaurants opened – wandering the town at night felt like we were wandering in a ghost town. We ended up having a dinner of rice balls and deer meat at the hotel. Breakfast though was far more satisfying – the salmon was amazing. And the onsen at the hotel was incredible.

地獄谷野猿公苑の帰り道に、何と眼鏡を壊してしまうという事件が。直すのは無理そうだったので、別所温泉に向かう途中にショッピングモールのある、上田という郊外の街に立ち寄りました。無事に眼鏡を購入することができたんですが、２時間もせずに全て終わったことに驚きました！オーストラリアだったら、新しい眼鏡買うのに、だいたい一週間くらいはかかります。

上田は長野市の南の方で、湯田中から電車で2時間ほどのところにあります。関ヶ原の戦いにも名前が出てくる、上田城があることなんかで知られています。お城の周りには大きな広場があって、そこで息子をあそばせたり。

そして今回の小旅行の最終目的地、別所温泉へ。ここもまた、温泉で非常に有名な小さな街ですが、こちらは盆地に位置しているので、雪はほとんどありませんでした。私たちは旅館に泊まっていましたが、年末年始でほとんどの店は閉まっており、空いているレストランは2軒だけ。まるでゴーストタウンにいるかのような気分でした。結局ホテルで、おにぎりと鹿肉の夕食をとることに。でも、朝食は夕食より断然よかったです(鮭が最高だった)。宿の温泉も最高でした。

Markの冬休み Part 1

Over the holidays, my family and I went to Yudanaka, Bessho Onsen and a brief stop at Ueda. Yudanaka is in the north of Nagano (north of Nagano city). We took the shinkansen to Nagano station and then took a train to Yudanaka. Yudanaka is famous for its hot springs. It’s also close to the famous snow monkey park.

Yudanaka is a small town and is the last stop on the Nagano-Dentetsu Line. The train ride from Nagano to Yudanaka was great; seeing a landscape full of snow reminded me of my first trip to Japan. It brought back that excitement.

The hotel room was surprisingly big and my son loved it because he could jump around on the futons. After a nice shabu shabu meal (my son had hamburg) and going to the onsen, I took some pics of the town at night when it was snowing.

The next day, we all went to the snow monkey park. It’s about a two and a half kilometer hike up the mountain from the closest bus stop. Although it was sunny, it was colder than we had expected it to be. When we got to the park, I was surprised by how many monkeys were there and equally surprised by how many tourists were there.

冬休みを利用して、家族と一緒に湯田中温泉、別所温泉、上田に行ってきました。湯田中は長野市の北の方で、新幹線で長野まで行ってから、電車に乗り換えないといけません。温泉で有名な街ですが、温泉に入る猿が見れる地獄谷野猿公苑もよく知られています。

湯田中は長野電鉄の終点にある小さな街なんですが、長野から湯田中までの電車からの景色が最高なんです。雪景色を眺めてると、初めて日本を旅行した時の記憶が甦ってきて、ワクワクしました。

ホテルは思ったより広く、息子は布団の上で飛び跳ねて大喜び。美味しいしゃぶしゃぶをいただいて(息子はハンバーグでしたが)、温泉に行った後、雪の降る夜の街に出て、写真を何枚か撮りました。

翌日、地獄谷野猿公苑へ。公苑は一番近いバス停から2.5kmほど山を歩いたところにあります。天気は良かったのですが、思ったより寒かったです。着いてみると、たくさんの猿がいるのに驚いたのと同じくらい、たくさんの観光客がいることに驚きました。

Hawaii-Tabby!

While I was in Hawaii my sisters wanted to go on a sunrise hike, I’m not a big fan of hiking but I couldn’t help but be excited to see such a beautiful view. There are multiple small concrete buildings along the trail so you can stop whenever you get tired. Of course my sisters, being regular hikers, wanted to go to the furthest building on the trail but I burnt out at the 2nd building. I was surprised to see that everyone watches the sunrise from the roof of the building but after getting up there I understood why, it was such a great view! Definitely worth waking up at 4am. Have you ever gone on a sunrise hike?

ハワイにいる間、姉が朝日を見にハイキングに行きたいということで、私自身はハイキングはあまり好きではないのですが、まあ綺麗な朝日が見れるっていうならということで参加しました。トレイルに沿って、小さなコンクリートの建物がいくつかあるので、疲れた時にはいつでも途中で止めて、そこから朝日を見ることができます。普段からハイキングが好きな姉は、当然一番遠くの建物まで行きたがったんですが、私は2番目の建物で早くもエネルギー切れに。みんな建物の屋根に上って朝日を見ている様子に驚いたんですけど、上に上がってみて理由がわかりました。眺めが本当に最高なんです！朝4時に起きたかいがありました。皆さんは、朝日を見にハイキングしたことありますか？

Hawaii! -Tabby

When I went to Hawaii I went to see a popular alley where the street is lined with huge surf boards. It was actually a great view with the beach in the distance and all the colorful surfboards. Unfortunately a few days after I went, it was reported that the surf boards had caught on fire! A few of them were totally ruined, some were able to be saved.

ハワイにいる間、大きなサーフボードで埋め尽くされた有名な路地を見に行ってきました。カラフルなサーフボードの向こうにビーチが見えて、最高の眺めでした。残念ながら、私が行った数日後に、火事でボードが燃えてしまったそう！いくつかのボードは完全にダメになってしまったそうですが、無事だったものもあったようです。

コロンビア、グアタペ

グアタペは、コロンビアにあるとってもユニークな街です。もし、メデジン(首都ボゴタに次ぐ大都市)へ行くことがあったら、ぜひ、このグアタペまで足を伸ばしてみてください！メデジンからバスでたったの2時間なので日帰りでも訪れることが可能です(もちろん、日程に余裕のある方には、数日泊まってのんびりするのをオススメしますが)！すごく小さな街なんですが、その街を彩るカラフルな建物と、巨大な一枚岩で知られております。この巨大な岩は登る事ができて、頂上からはグアタペ湖のパノラマビューが楽しめちゃいます！

Guatape is a unique little town in Columbia. If you ever go to Medellin, one of the biggest cities in Columbia, then short trip to Guatape is a must. It’s only a two-hour bus ride from Medellin, so you can even go there on a day trip (Though I would recommend you to spend a few nights there). This tiny little town is known for the colorful picturesque buildings and the gigantic rock called La Piedra del Penol.  You can climb it up and from the top, you can enjoy a panoramic views of Guatape lake and this beautiful region.

スピティ渓谷の朝

インド北部、ヒマーチャルプラデーシュ州に位置するスピティ渓谷。ヒマラヤ山脈に沿った寒冷なエリアで、平均標高も3500ｍとかなり高く、夏の間のみ訪れることが可能です。一番近い比較的大きい街マナリから、バスやジープが出てるんですが、ただこのマナリ自体も、自然豊かな田舎なので(笑)、デリーなどの大都市からここへ行くまでも時間がかかります。マナリから、スピティ渓谷のメインタウン”カザ”までは、約12時間。「そのくらいなら平気かな」と思うかもしれませんが、あのですね、乗り物も道もかなりワイルドなんで、気を付けてください(笑)。私自身はそういうの全く平気なタイプですが、快適なバスの旅からは正直ほど遠いです。でも窓の外をみれば、そんな事どうでもよくなるような、景色が待っておりますので。

カザからは、ローカルバスで小さな村々を訪れることができます。また、私のような登山好きが楽しめるトレッキングトレイルもあるので、地元の方の家に泊まりながら、歩いて村々を回ることもできちゃいます！自然、文化、人…スピティで出会った全てが、忘れられない特別な思い出です。写真は、4日間のトレッキングの最中、ヒッキムという村で撮ったものです。前日に季節外れの雪が降り、朝起きたら、村全体が薄っすらと雪に覆われていて、それはそれは美しい朝でした。

Spiti Valley is a cold desert valley nestled in the Himalayan Mountain range in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It’s located at a high altitude  (the average altitude is about 3500m) and only accessible during summer. To get there, you can take a bus or Jeep from the closest (and somewhat biggish) town named Manali, which itself is also quite remote. From Manali to Kaza, the main town of Spiti Valley, it’ll take you about 12 hours. You might think “Oh, that’s not too bad.” But remember, the vehicles and the roads are really wild. So you shouldn’t expect a comfortable trip. If you look out the window, however, the scenery will take your mind off the rough ride.

From Kaza, you can take local buses to several small villages, which also have trails for trekking lovers. You can enjoy trekking between villages and stay at locals’ houses. The nature, the culture, the people…everything I experienced there was exceptional. The picture above was taken in a small village called Hikkim, when I was there on a four-day trek. We had an early snow the night before and when we woke up in the morning, the whole village was covered with a thin layer of snow. It was such a beautiful morning.

Ayami in リヨン！

フランスで私が唯一訪れた街、リヨン。せっかくフランスに行ったのだから、パリくらいはせめて見ておきたかったのですが、安宿が見つけられずに断念…(その時私は長期バックパック中で、西ヨーロッパは高すぎるので早く抜けなくては！という状況でした)。パリは諦め、リヨンにだけ寄る事にし、5日間滞在しました。一日の予算が限られていたので、お金のかかる事は一切せずに、ただただ街をプラプラしていたのですが、これだけでもう大満足でした。ソーヌ川沿いのリヨン歴史地区では、美しい中世の街並みや、ルネサンス期の建物が楽しめちゃいます。歩いてるだけで全然飽きません。いや本当に素敵な街です。パリほど観光客でごった返してないでしょうしね、おそらく。

Lyon was the only city I visited in France. I know I should’ve at least gone to Paris, but I just couldn’t find any accommodation I could afford (At that time, I was trying to get out of Western Europe as soon as possible, because everything was quite expensive for me as a backpacker…) So I went to Lyon instead, and stayed there for five days. Since I was sticking to a tight daily budget, all I did was just walk around the city. And I enjoyed that a lot. Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) found along the Saone River boasts beautiful medieval quarters and Renaissance buildings.  You’ll never get bored walking around.  It’s such a lovely city. And less touristy than Paris, I imagine.
