映画の名台詞から英語を学ぼう！『エターナル・サンシャイン』

本日は、傑作SFロマンス『エターナル・サンシャイン』からご紹介いたします！『マルコヴィッチの穴』などで知られるチャーリー・カウフマンが脚本を書き、もともとミュージックビデオなどを撮っていたミシェル・ゴンドリーが監督を務めた本作品。切なくてオシャレなラブストーリー！と日本でも話題になりました。私も大学時代、映画研究会の仲間と劇場に足を運んだのを覚えています。辛い過去を消し去るために、記憶除去手術を受けた男が、愛の記憶を辿っていく話です。記憶が消えていく様子のヴィジュアル化が非常にうまくてですね、ポップでオシャレな映像が、忘れていくことの悲しさを引き立てます。
台詞は恋人に、「あなたは自分の事を何も話してくれない」と責められた時に放ったひと言。

今日は、副詞的の使い方を学びましょう。形容詞が名詞を修飾するのに対し、副詞は動詞や形容詞などを修飾します。
constantly[副詞]
常に、絶えず
例: My boyfriend constantly changes his mind about us living together. Maybe he just doesn’t want to.
(彼は一緒に暮らすことに関して、しょっちゅう気が変わる。したくないだけなのかも。)
necessarily[副詞]
(否定文で)必ずしも…ない
例: But it doesn’t necessarily mean that he no longer loves you.
(でも、だからといって、彼がもうあなたを好きじゃないとは限らないでしょ)

6月の月刊テーマはDIY! タイルでオリジナルコースターを作ろう！
私はよく友達と家でアートパーティーをします。ペンキとワインを用意して。こんなご時世にもピッタリの休日の過ごし方です。
ということで今週は、部屋をパッと明るくしてくれるタイルコースターの作り方を学びましょう！材料は東急ハンズや世界堂など、大型のホームセンターや雑貨店で手に入ります。
I always enjoy holding art parties with my friends at home. With some paints and a glass of wine, it’s the perfect activity during these times. This week we’re going to learn how to make tile coasters to brighten up your house! Supplies can be found at Tokyu Hands, Sekaido, or other large craft stores.
Supplies 材料:
-square ceramic tiles セラミックタイル
-Acrylic paint/ paint brush アクリル絵の具/絵筆
-Mod Podge clear acrylic sealant (or any clear sealant) Mod Podgeアクリルシーラー(他透明なコーティング剤なら何でも)
-Super glue 強力接着剤
-Scissors ハサミ
-Thin cork sheet コルクシート
Directions 作り方:
1.Take your tile and clean the shiny side with water to clean it from any dirt and oils.
タイルを水洗いし、汚れや油を落としましょう。
2.With the acrylic paints, enjoy drawing your design! (be careful to not use a lot of paint on the tiles and only a thin layer of paint. That way it’ll dry faster and stick to the tile better.)
アクリル絵の具で好きなデザインを描きましょう！(絵具はつけ過ぎず、薄く塗りましょう。早く乾いて、タイルから取れにくくなります。)
3.Allow some time for the paints to dry.
しばらく乾かしましょう
4.One the paints are completely dried, paint a layer of Mod podge clear acrylic sealant with a clean paintbrush.
完全に乾いたら、綺麗なブラシでコーティング剤を塗ります。
5.Once the sealant is dry, cut a square piece of cork sheet , any size that fits the bottom of your tile
コーティング剤が乾いたら、タイルのサイズに合わせてコルクシートをカットします。
6. Super glue the square cork sheet piece to the bottom of your tile. (you can also stack something heavy on top of the tile to help the cork sheet stick nicely to the tile.)
協力接着を使ってコルクシートをタイルの裏に貼り付けます。(上に何か重しを乗せると、よりしっかりくっつきます)
7.Wait the amount of time suggested on the glue package. And then you’re set!
接着剤のパッケージ記載の時間を待ったら、完成です！

You can get some ribbon and wrap your tiles together and turn it into the perfect gift!
リボンなどでラッピングしてあげれば、素敵なプレゼントにもなります！

砂漠の惑星タトゥイーンが実在するって知ってましたか？いや、惑星は実在しないんですけどもね。実はスターウォーズの多くのシーンが、チュニジアで撮影されました。ロケ地の一つにタタウィンっていう場所があるんですけど、そこがタトゥイーンのモデルになったと言われています。そしてなんと、映画のセットが砂漠のど真ん中にそのまま残されているのです！近くの街から四駆に乗って、日帰りで訪れることができます。近くには他にも、ルークが産まれた家(宿泊できます！)やアナキンが子供の頃にいた奴隷居住区など、スターウォーズのロケ地がいっぱいです！
Did you know that Tatooine actually exists? Well, the planet doesn’t exist but the majority of desert scenes in the original Star Wars were filmed in Tunisia, and there is a city called Tataouine which helped inspire the planet Tatooine. And many of the movie sets still remain standing today in the middle of the desert! You can visit there by 4WD from the town. Also there are other Star wars locations around the area, such as the Lars homestead where Luke Skywalker was raised (you can even stay in!), the Mos Espas slave quarters where Anakin Skywalker spent his childhood, and so on.

The coolest Airbnb I’ve ever stayed in,
it’s actually called the cliff house because it’s built into the side of a cliff.
One wall above the living room and bathroom is just raw exposed rock.
The property itself is huge and just a short walk away is a cute little Teepee,
perfect for camping and picnics.
There are thousand year old petroglyphs (pictures) carved into the canyon wall
and if you take a ropes and latter course up onto the mesa above the house,
you can reach this view of the huge mountain.
You get a gorgeous view of the snowy mountains and desert cliffs.
It’s the perfect place to unwind and unplug.
これまでで一番のAirbnb。
ここはクリフハウス(崖の上の家)と呼ばれていて、実際に崖の端に建っています。
リビングの壁の一部や、バスルームは自然の岩がむき出しです。広大な敷地内では、可愛らしいティピー(ネイティブアメリカンのテント)もあり、キャンプやピクニックに最適です。
洞窟内に掘られた数千年前の壁画が見れたり、ロープと梯子を使って家の上のメサまで登れば、こんな景色が見下ろせます。
雪を被った山々や、砂漠の断崖の景色は本当に最高。
しばし、喧騒から離れてリラックスするのに持って来いのロケーションです。

猛犬注意！
これ、何だかわかりますか？約2000年前の「猛犬注意」サインです！西暦79年に火山噴火によって消滅したとされている、イタリア、ナポリにある古代都市ポンペイに行ってきました。18世紀に発掘作業が進むまで、長い間火山灰の下に眠っていたため、多くの建物が当時のままの姿を残し、モザイク画やフレスコ画も色鮮やかな状態で保存されています。家がたくさん残っていて、中に入れるものもあるんですが、写真のように玄関に「猛犬注意」のフレスコ画があったりします。他にも、神殿や円形劇場といった大きな施設から、公衆浴場、パン屋、レストラン、洗濯屋、壁の落書き、なんと娼館まで、当時の庶民の様子を伺い知れる様々なものが残っており、本当に2000年前の古代都市を歩いているような感覚に陥ります。私はこのポンペイ遺跡に7時間ほど滞在しましたが、それでも全然足りなかったです(笑)。私がこれまで訪れたなかで一番好きな遺跡です！
Do you know what it is? It’s a “Beware of Dog” sign from about two thousand years ago. You can find it in Pompeii, the ancient city in Naples, Italy, which was buried under volcanic ash in the eruption in AD 79. Since the whole area had been covered by the ash for such a long time until the excavation in 18th century, everything has been preserved really well. Many of the buildings are still almost in the same shape as they were back then and the frescoes and mosaics retain their bright and original color. There are lots of houses you can go into and some of them have this “Beware of Dog” sign at their entrances. You can also find temples, theaters, bakeries, restaurants, cleaning shops, graffiti on the walls and even brothels at the site. They tell you how people lived here and you start to feel like you’ve actually gone back two thousand years ago. I spent 7 hours there and that wasn’t enough at all. This is the most amazing ancient ruins I’ve ever visited.

本日は、あの有名なファッションデザイナー、トム・フォードの映画監督デビュー作品、『シングルマン』からご紹介いたします！自殺を決意した男の、最後の一日を描いた作品です。流石デザイナーというだけあって、１カット１カットの画がとにかく美しいです！そしてそんな美しい画から滲みでるのは、主人公のどうしようもない孤独感で、その孤独感がもう最初っから最後までずーっと画面に張り付いてるんですよ。本当に胸を締め付けられる作品です。主人公を演じるコリン・ファースの演技も最高です。かなり重たい作品ではありますが、超名作ですので、ぜひ一度見てみて下さいね！
