インド北部、ヒマーチャルプラデーシュ州に位置するスピティ渓谷。ヒマラヤ山脈に沿った寒冷なエリアで、平均標高も3500ｍとかなり高く、夏の間のみ訪れることが可能です。一番近い比較的大きい街マナリから、バスやジープが出てるんですが、ただこのマナリ自体も、自然豊かな田舎なので(笑)、デリーなどの大都市からここへ行くまでも時間がかかります。マナリから、スピティ渓谷のメインタウン”カザ”までは、約12時間。「そのくらいなら平気かな」と思うかもしれませんが、あのですね、乗り物も道もかなりワイルドなんで、気を付けてください(笑)。私自身はそういうの全く平気なタイプですが、快適なバスの旅からは正直ほど遠いです。でも窓の外をみれば、そんな事どうでもよくなるような、景色が待っておりますので。

カザからは、ローカルバスで小さな村々を訪れることができます。また、私のような登山好きが楽しめるトレッキングトレイルもあるので、地元の方の家に泊まりながら、歩いて村々を回ることもできちゃいます！自然、文化、人…スピティで出会った全てが、忘れられない特別な思い出です。写真は、4日間のトレッキングの最中、ヒッキムという村で撮ったものです。前日に季節外れの雪が降り、朝起きたら、村全体が薄っすらと雪に覆われていて、それはそれは美しい朝でした。

Spiti Valley is a cold desert valley nestled in the Himalayan Mountain range in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It’s located at a high altitude  (the average altitude is about 3500m) and only accessible during summer. To get there, you can take a bus or Jeep from the closest (and somewhat biggish) town named Manali, which itself is also quite remote. From Manali to Kaza, the main town of Spiti Valley, it’ll take you about 12 hours. You might think “Oh, that’s not too bad.” But remember, the vehicles and the roads are really wild. So you shouldn’t expect a comfortable trip. If you look out the window, however, the scenery will take your mind off the rough ride.

From Kaza, you can take local buses to several small villages, which also have trails for trekking lovers. You can enjoy trekking between villages and stay at locals’ houses. The nature, the culture, the people…everything I experienced there was exceptional. The picture above was taken in a small village called Hikkim, when I was there on a four-day trek. We had an early snow the night before and when we woke up in the morning, the whole village was covered with a thin layer of snow. It was such a beautiful morning.

これまでに行った大都市の中で、一番のお気に入りはローマです！イタリアに行く予定はなかったんですが、ちょうどモロッコにいた時に、友達が仕事でフィレンツェに来ると知り、格安航空券でローマまで飛びました。ローマなんてどうせ観光客でごった返してるだけだろうから、数日滞在してすぐフィレンツェに向かおう〜と特にあまり期待していなかったのですが…一瞬で心を奪われてしまいました！いや、観光客でごった返してるのはその通りなんですけどね。そんなことどうでもよくなるくらい圧倒されました。とにかくもうこの2000年前の遺跡がですね、ほんとにそこら中にあるんですよ。入場料払って中に入らなかったとしても、街をプラプラしてるだけでもう至る所に遺跡が。ああ、ほんとにかつてここにローマ帝国があったんだなと、容易に実感できます。面白いなと思った話が、ローマってインフラがあまり整ってないんですが(特にメトロシステム)、その原因の一つが、なんか工事しようとすると、その度に新しい遺跡が発掘されちゃうからみたいです！

Out of all the big cities that I’ve visited, Rome is probably my favorite. I wasn’t planning to go to Italy, but when I was in Morocco, it turned out that one of my friends was coming to Florence, the central-northern city in Italy. So I took a cheap flight to Rome thinking that I would stay there just for few days and then head to Florence. I didn’t expect much from Rome. I thought it would be just another touristy and crowded city. Well, I was right. But that doesn’t matter at all. Rome is amazing! It all comes down to those ruins from 2000 years ago. And they’re everywhere. Even if you didn’t pay to get inside those ruins and just walked around the city, you can still see A LOT. It’s not that difficult to imagine that once the Roman Empire actually flourished here. What I thought was funny was that the infrastructure there, especially the metro system, wasn’t great because every time they tried to do some construction, they always found more ruins!

シナイ山は、皆さんご存知の通り、モーゼが10戒を授かったと言われている場所です。私はエジプトのシナイ半島にあるダハブという街(ダイビングしたり、のんびり過ごすのに最適な素晴らしい場所です！)に滞在中、ツアーでこのシナイ山に行ってきました。夜遅くにダハブの街を出発して、バンで近くの小さな村まで行き、暗いうちに登山を開始。３時間ほどで、頂上まであと700段のところにある小さなティーハウスに到着したんですが、まだ日の出まで時間があったのと、非常に寒かったので、そこで最後のひと頑張りの前に、お茶を飲みながら暖をとったりして時間を潰しました。そして、空が明るくなってきた頃に頂上まで登りきり、綺麗な朝陽を存分に満喫しました。

暗い中、寒い中での登山は大変ですが、神聖な山の頂上で、シナイ砂漠の空に昇る朝陽を見るのは、そんな苦労も吹っ飛ぶくらい素晴らしいものです！また、帰りには山の麓にある、現在も使用中のものでは世界最古と言われている、聖カトリナ修道院にも寄れちゃいます。

Mount Sinai is, as you probably know, considered to be the holy mountain where God gave Ten Commandments to Moses. During my stay in Dahab (an amazing place for relaxing and scuba diving in Sinai peninsula, Egypt), I took an overnight tour to Mt. Sinai. We left the town late at night, took a van to a small town near the mountain and started climbing it in the dark. After about three hours, we got to the little tea house that is located about 700 steps below the summit.  Since we still had some time until sunrise and it was really cold, we decided to have some tea before the final push. As the sky was getting lighter, we eventually climbed up to the top and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise.

Although you need to hike in the dark and the cold, seeing the sun rise in the morning sky over the Sinai desert at the top of the holly mountain is absolutely worth the hassle.  On the way back, you can also visit Saint Catherine’s Monastery, which is situated at the foot of the mountain and is one of the world’s oldest monasteries in use.

アルゼンチン北部、フフイ州にあるインカ・クエバより。古いものでおよそ9000年前にも遡る、古代の壁画が見れる洞窟です(正確にはこれは洞窟ではなく岩石ですが、便宜上洞窟とします💦)。パタゴニアの北部にクエバ・デ・ラス・マノスという手の跡の洞窟があって、こちらは非常に有名なんですが、このインカ・クエバに関してはほとんど知名度がありません。でも知られてないのが不思議なくらい、見る価値のある穴場スポットです！

近くのウマワカという町から、ルート９を北上するローカルバスに乗り、運転手に”インカ・クエバ”と伝えれば、何もない道路の真ん中で降ろしてくれます。左手に、下へ下る細い獣道みたいなものが見えるので、道路から下の平野まで降りていきます。そうすると、うっすらと川の跡があるので、あとはそれに沿ってずっと進んでいくだけです。川の跡は誰が見てもすぐわかるから、見失うことはないよって言われたんですが、私にはそうでもありませんでした💦ただ、私は極端に方向音痴なところがあるので、普通の人は恐らく問題ないと思います。まあまず迷うことはないはずです。

最高の景色を満喫しながら、約２時間ほど歩いて、ようやく洞窟を見つけることができました。ただですね、実はこの洞窟、一人で入ることはできなくて、洞窟を管理している人を呼ばなきゃいけないんですが、そこが一番の問題なんですよね。実はバスを降りた時に、ちょうど洞窟から戻って来た人たちに会ったんですが、彼らは洞窟まで辿り着いたものの、その管理人を見つけることができず、残念ながら引き返してきたそうです…。他に途中で誰も会わなかったので、本当に管理人を見つけられるかどうか心配だったんですが、私は無事会えました！

この管理人さんを見つけるには、まず洞窟が見えてきたら、近くに丘の上に立つ白い旗をさがします。で、その丘に登ると(そんな高くないんですぐ登れます)、遠くに小さな家が一軒見えるんですね。で、後は、管理人さんの犬に気づいてもらえれば、犬が吠えて、管理人さんが気づいて、こっちまで来てくれる仕組みになってます(笑)。セルヒオっていうすごく優しい男性が、洞窟を案内して、壁画のことなど色々説明してくれます。最後に彼に、お礼の支払いをするのを忘れないようにしてください(特にいくらと決まっているわけではないので、町で相場を聞いて行きましょう)。

なかなか行きづらい所ではありますが、壁画も道中の景色も本当に素晴らしいので、一見の価値ありです！

Inca Cueva is, despite the name, not a cave but a rock formation in JuJuy, one of the northernmost provinces in Argentina. It has amazing wall paintings dating back 9000 years at the oldest. But unlike Cueva de las Manos, which is located in the northern Patagonia region and known for its stenciled hand paintings, Inca Cueva is not well-known. And it definitely deserves more attention.

From Humahuaca, the closest town to the site, you can take a local bus running north on route 9 .Tell the driver that you want to go to Inca Cueva, then he’ll drop you in the middle of the road. On your left hand side, you’ll find a small path going down and once you get down to the field, you can just follow the riverbed (it has dried up) towards the site. I was told it was easy to find your way there, but it wasn’t obvious to me at the time. I’m very bad at directions. If you’re the same way, you should keep a close eye on where you’re going, but otherwise you’ll be fine.

After about two hours of hiking with a breathtaking view, I finally found the cave (though, as I said, it’s technically not a cave). But you can’t get close without a guide, as there is a fence and a locked gate around it. You’ll need to find a friendly gentlemen who goes by Sergio. I passed a couple of people who didn’t know where to find him, luckily I already knew where to go.

The first step is to stand near the cave, look around for a white flag standing on the top of a small hill. Start climbing and after you get to the top (it’s not that high, don’t worry), you’ll see a small house in the distance. At some point, Sergio’s dog may hear you coming and start barking. If this happens, don’t worry, Sergio is probably already on his way to you. He’s an extremely nice guy, and will show you around and explain everything about the paintings. Also, don’t forget to give him a fair tip at the end (there’s no fixed price). In fact, I suggest you ask what a fair tip would be before you leave Humahuaca.

It’s not a very easy place to get to. But the paintings, the view, and the environment are absolutely worth seeing.

モロッコのエッサウィラという港街に一週間ほど滞在していました。小さな街ながら、白と青の建物で彩られた美しい街並み、新鮮な魚介、オシャレなアートなどで観光客にも人気です。居心地がよくて、何をするでものんびり過ごしていたんですが、ラッキーなことに滞在していたホステルで料理上手な中国人とスペイン人に出会いました！私料理苦手なんですが(バックパッキング中は必要に駆られて、簡単なものは作っていましたが)、彼らと一緒に毎日ですね、魚市場に新鮮な魚を仕入れに行き(めちゃくちゃ安いです)、中華やらパエリアやらを作ってもらってたんです！私は毎日米を炊く係(笑)。食べれないものが多い上に、料理下手な上に、貧乏バックパッカーだった私にとっては、バックパッキング中の食事が本当に大変だったんですけど、この一週間はもう最高でしたね。

I spent a week in a small port city called Essaouira, in Morocco. The city is known for its beautiful blue and white buildings, fresh seafood, and art culture, and thus it attracts a lot of visitors. I didn’t do anything in particular there but just relaxed every day. Luckily however, I met a Chinese guy and a Spanish guy at the hostel who were both really good at cooking. (Just so you know, I’m not good at cooking. I usually don’t cook much but I did while backpacking out of necessity.) So every day we went to the fish market by the port and bought fresh seafood (everything was really cheap and fresh!), and every night they made various dishes like spicy Chinese food, paella, and so on, while all I did was cook rice. Being a picky eater, a bad cook, and a backpacker on budget, it was really hard to eat what I wanted on that trip. So, although I didn’t do anything special there, the whole week spent with two great chefs was exceptional.
