本日は、私の大好きなコーエン兄弟の作品からまたご紹介したいと思います！彼らの作品の中で私が１番好きな『ノーカントリー』は以前ご紹介しましたが、今日紹介するのは２番目に好きな作品です(同率２位が他に２作品あるんで、それはまたいづれご紹介します笑)。『インサイド・ルーウィン・デイヴィス』は、６０年代前半、フォークブームを目前に控えたグリニッジヴィレッジで、上手くいかずにもがくフォークシンガーの一週間を描いた作品です。主演はオスカーアイザックで、実際にギターを弾き歌っているんですが、これがめちゃくちゃいいんですよ。どうやら音楽学校を卒業しているようですが、その才能が遺憾なく発揮されております。そして演奏だけじゃなく演技も最高。その前から活躍はしていましたが、この作品で一躍有名になり、その後スターウォーズなどにも出演しましたね。スターウォーズと言えば、まだ当時そこまで有名ではなかった(少なくとも日本では)アダムドライバーも本作品にちょこっと出演しております！カイロレンとポーが一緒に謎の宇宙の歌を歌うシーンは、スターウォーズファンも必見です！
台詞は、主人公がその不甲斐なさを友人から責められるシーンより。

学校だと、この‘at all’って、否定文での使い方しか習ってないですよね？肯定文でも普通に使うので、色々な使い方の例を見てみましょう。

(私たちのとこで働くことに少しでも興味ある？)

例: Have you heard from her at all?
(彼女から何か連絡あった？)

例: Your transferable skills can take you anywhere at all.
(君の応用能力があれば、どんなところでも間違いなくやっていけるよ)

燕岳〜常念岳への縦走中、大天荘のキャンプ場にテントを張り一泊しました。大天荘は大天井岳の頂上までわずか10分、標高2922ｍに位置する山小屋で、眼前には北アルプスの大パノラマが望めます。その日の空はかなり靄がかかっていて、中々北アルプスの山々を拝むことができなかったのですが、夕暮れ時に槍ヶ岳が綺麗に姿を現わしてくれました。夕陽に照らされたピンク色の靄がまた神秘的でいい感じでした。

When I was on a two-day trek from Mt. Tsubakuro to Mt. Jonen, I spent a night at the Daitenso campsite, which is located at an elevation of  2922 meters and only ten minutes away from the top of Mt. Otensho. It’s got an amazing panoramic view of the Northern Japan Alps spread out in front of you. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t stable and it was quite hazy that day so we couldn’t really see those mountain ranges. But at around dusk, we were finally able to see a mystical view of Mt. Yari set amongst  sunset colored haze.

本日は、前回に引き続き、男女の別れを描いたを作品をご紹介いたします(笑)！前回の『５００日のサマー』はポップな演出が効いた(まあそれが切ないんですけどね…)作品でしたが、本日ご紹介する『ブルー・バレンタイン』は、終始リアルな演出で、重苦しい空気が映画全体に漂っています。こちらも、もう上手くいかなくなってしまった夫婦ディーンとシンディーの現在と、出会った当初の楽しかった記憶が対比されるような作りになっています。めちゃくちゃいい作品なんですけど、本当に心が苦しくなる重たい作品なので、カップルで鑑賞する際は注意してください(笑)。
台詞は、シンディーのおばあちゃんがシンディーに放った一言。

本日は『５００日のサマー』からご紹介します！オシャレでポップな、ラブストーリーのようでいて、ラブストーリーではない(映画の冒頭でもそう語られている)、この作品。サマーという女の子に夢中になるも失恋をした主人公トムが、楽しかった日々を振り返る形で映画は進んでいきます。全てトム目線で、過去の回想もトムの頭にランダムに浮かんだ順という感じで、時系列が入り乱れているんですが、それが傷心の主人公の心を見事に反映していてとてもリアルです。それに対して、サマー側の想いはポップな演出で非常に上手く隠されていて、トム目線で見ていくと、彼女はトムを振り回す小悪魔にしか見えないような作りになっています。そんな映画の構造がすれ違う２人の切なさを引き立たせており、非常に素晴らしい作品に仕上がっております！

これまで飲んだ中で一番の焼酎です！10年くらい前に神楽坂のバーで初めて飲み、それ以来私のお気に入りです！鹿児島の焼酎で契約農家栽培のアヤムラサキ芋が使用されています。下のリンクから買えるお店が探せます。
This is the best imo-shochu I’ve ever had! I first had it at a bar in Kagurazaka about 10 years ago and since then it’s been my favorite! It’s made in Kagoshima, from purple potatoes grown by local contracted farmers. You can find the shops that sell this shochu in the link below.

Sierra Nevada / シエラネバダ (ビール)

シエラネバダこそ地球上で一番美味しいビール！大学時代に飲み始めて、今でも大好きです。いつまでも飽きずに飲み続けられます。成城石井など日本でも買える場所はありますが、すごく高いのが残念。日本だと大体550円くらいするんですが、アメリカだと、なんとたったの1.5ドル！見かけたら試してぜひ試してみてください！
Sierra Nevada is the best beer on the planet! It’s the first beer I started drinking in university and I still love it today. It’s a beer that I can drink constantly and never get tired of. You can actually buy it at some places in Japan, like at Seijo Ishii, but it’s pretty expensive. A can here in Japan costs around ￥550, but it’s only around $1.50 in the States. So every year I go home, I bring back 24 bottles. Ha ha! Give it a try if you see it!

モロッコの魚市場にて

モロッコのエッサウィラという港街に一週間ほど滞在していました。小さな街ながら、白と青の建物で彩られた美しい街並み、新鮮な魚介、オシャレなアートなどで観光客にも人気です。居心地がよくて、何をするでものんびり過ごしていたんですが、ラッキーなことに滞在していたホステルで料理上手な中国人とスペイン人に出会いました！私料理苦手なんですが(バックパッキング中は必要に駆られて、簡単なものは作っていましたが)、彼らと一緒に毎日ですね、魚市場に新鮮な魚を仕入れに行き(めちゃくちゃ安いです)、中華やらパエリアやらを作ってもらってたんです！私は毎日米を炊く係(笑)。食べれないものが多い上に、料理下手な上に、貧乏バックパッカーだった私にとっては、バックパッキング中の食事が本当に大変だったんですけど、この一週間はもう最高でしたね。

I spent a week in a small port city called Essaouira, in Morocco. The city is known for its beautiful blue and white buildings, fresh seafood, and art culture, and thus it attracts a lot of visitors. I didn’t do anything in particular there but just relaxed every day. Luckily however, I met a Chinese guy and a Spanish guy at the hostel who were both really good at cooking. (Just so you know, I’m not good at cooking. I usually don’t cook much but I did while backpacking out of necessity.) So every day we went to the fish market by the port and bought fresh seafood (everything was really cheap and fresh!), and every night they made various dishes like spicy Chinese food, paella, and so on, while all I did was cook rice. Being a picky eater, a bad cook, and a backpacker on budget, it was really hard to eat what I wanted on that trip. So, although I didn’t do anything special there, the whole week spent with two great chefs was exceptional.

In our last post for recommendations we have one of my all-time favorite manga, 7 SEEDS!
This story is heart wrenching, post-apocalyptic story that will have you hooked for all 35 volumes.

 

Plot(あらすじ)
巨大隕石による地球滅亡に備えて、日本政府は未来で目覚めさせるための5つのグループを編成。各チームは7人とガイドで構成されており、地球が再び人類にとって生存可能な環境になってから目覚めるようにプログラミングされた。そして彼らが目覚めた時には、地球の風景は完全に別のものになっており、新しい生態系、新しい種、予測不可能な出来事で溢れていた。各チームには季節の名前がつけられており、夏のみAとBが存在する。Aがこのプロジェクトの為に生まれ、育てられてきた子供たちで構成されているのに対し、Bには滅亡前の世界での「落ちこぼれ」や生き残るのは難しいだろうと考えられた連中が選ばれていた。夏Aを除き、一切何も聞かされずに冬眠ポッドに入れられていた彼らだったが、どのチームも日本の存亡を賭けて、この過酷な世界を生き抜かなければならなかった。
7 Seeds tells the story of how the Japanese government prepared five teams to wake up in a future world following a mass extinction on Earth (caused by a meteor). Each team consists of seven people plus a guide and are programmed to awaken only when the world readjusts to a livable state. By this point, the entire landscape has shifted – there’s new ecosystems, new species, and constant uncertainties. The teams are named after the seasons, with two summer teams, A and B. B is filled with the old-world “rejects”, or those they thought had no chance as survival while A includes kids born and bred for the purpose of this project. With the fact that they were never told about the project before being put into sleeping pods (except group summer A), each team has to try and survive in this new brutal world to continue the existence of Japan.

Review(感想)
もう最高の漫画です。不可思議で、ちょっと怖くて、メインストーリーを邪魔しないくらいの程よいロマンスなんかもあります。非常に繊細に描かれた終末もので、ストーリーとその個性的なキャラクター達に夢中になること間違いありません。無数のストーリーラインを有しながらも、決して本筋から逸脱することなく、それでいてそれぞれのストーリーもしっかり面白く、ちゃんとカラーがあって、一度たりとも、流し読みしたくなるような瞬間はありませんでした。決して気楽に読める作品ではありませんが、一体次に何が起こるのかと常にハラハラさせてくれる傑作です。
This manga is  amazing. It’s mysterious, slightly terrifying and just romantic enough to add some drama without taking away from the main story.  7 Seeds tells a post-apocalyptic story with such depth and heart that you can’t help but get swept into the story and its very distinctive characters. Despite the sheer number of plot lines and number of characters, the manga never strays from its main plot; each arc is interesting and distinctive, and I never once feel the urge to fast forward through it. It’s definitely not a manga you’d read easily but one that makes you sit on the edge of your seat thinking and guessing about what’s going to happen next.

Ayami タンザニアでライオンに会う

タンザニア、セレンゲティ国立公園＆ンゴロゴロクレーターにて、2泊3日のサファリツアーに参加しました！本当はもっと長いツアーに参加したかったけれども、そこは貧乏バックパッカーなので我慢。アフリカ屈指のサファリスポット、セレンゲティ国立公園はキリマンジャロの裾野に広がる広大なエリアで、地球上で最も多くの哺乳類が生息している地域とも言われています。有名なヌーの大移動には残念ながら出会えませんでしたが、それでもビックファイブ(ライオン、ゾウ、サイ、ヒョウ、バッファロー)を始めとする、様々な動物に出会えたので大満足。１番近くまで来てくれたのはライオン！55mmレンズの古いフィルムカメラと携帯カメラしかない私でしたが(他の人はみんな望遠レンズ持ってた…)、ちゃんと顔がわかるくらいまで近くに来てくれました！

I joined a 2-night safari tour in the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania a few years ago. I wanted to do the longer tour but that was all I could afford as a backpacker. The Serengeti National Park, located not far from Mt. Kilimanjaro in north central Tanzania, is one of the most famous parks in Africa. It’s known for its vast plains and is considered the most animal populated area on the planet. Although I couldn’t see the wildebeest migration which the park is famed for, I was able to see a lot of animals including the Big Five ーthe lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, buffaloー so I was quite happy. The animals that came the closest to us were the lions! I only had an old film camera with a 55mm lens and a phone camera with me (everybody else had a zoom lenses) but they came close enough that I could capture their faces!

あ、それからこの旅で発見した撮影技術を一つお見せします。何かにズームしたいのに、ズームレンズがない(でもなぜか双眼鏡はある笑)時の撮影方法です。
カメラのレンズを双眼鏡の覗き穴にあてましょう。それだけ！簡易ズームレンズの完成です。

Oh, and I’ll show you one of the photo techniques that I learned on this trip. This is how you take pictures when you want to zoom in on something but don’t happen to have a zoom lens (but have binoculars🤣).
Just put the camera lens against the binocular eyepiece. That’s all! This creates a simple zoom lens.

今日は、これまでに数々の名作を生み出してきたドイツ出身の映画監督、ヴィム・ヴェンダースの作品からご紹介したいと思います！70年代からずっと映画を撮り続けてきた(私の知る限り今も現役)ヴェンダース、かなりの作品数あって、私はほんの数作しか見れてないんですけど…その中で一番好きなのがこの『パリ、テキサス』です。家族と離れていた中年の男が家族を探す旅に出る、ロードムービー。主人公トラヴィスを演じたハリー・ディーン・スタントンが魅力的です。台詞の少ない静かな映画ですが、あの有名なマジックミラー越しのシーンは、本当に映画史に残る美しさですね。
